Get excited friends, if you didn’t already know from my Instagram posts, it’s One Room Challenge time, my favorite (design-related) time of the year! It all starts today and while I’ve joined in the challenge as a guest blogger in the past, this year I’m one of the 20 official designers for the challenge – say what?! I know, crazy. Seriously. I’m no design pro, I just constantly update my house so it is less old/ugly and more modern/awesome. Or at least awesomer. And to that awesomer end, I can’t wait to tell you what I’m up to this time around. I’m taking on my biggest challenge yet and it is all behind this charmingly tiny door in our master bedroom…
Yeah, behind that door lies this:
That, my friends, is an old, unused, slightly creepy closet that we’re turning into our master bathroom! I’m so excited on so many levels. I’m excited to add value to our home by adding a bathroom to our house, I’m excited to finally get use out of a previously unused space, and I’m really excited to quit sharing a bathroom with my two kids. Yay, no more looking at kid toothpaste on counters every day!
I’ll share more about the design plans next week but key components are going to be:
- white marble floors/walls (like the backsplash in our kitchen but walls likely in a herringbone pattern)
- a black vanity
- a vessel sink
- brass plumbing and hardware
- wood counters, and… wait for it…
- even a LAUNDRY SPACE!
As if all caps wasn’t enough, I could add about a thousand exclamation points after that last one. Not trekking two floors down to our basement to do laundry will be pretty awesome. Plus, it’ll be a laundry for adults only – isn’t half the reason you have kids to force them into unwelcome chores like doing their own laundry??
So here’s the big rub: my husband and I do all the work ourselves. So I am TERRIFIED of not finishing this project. Like knots in my stomach every night and endless crazy nightmares kind of terrified. We hired out the plumbing/electrical for this bathroom project a couple years ago when we did the kitchen (which is directly below the bathroom thus we did the plumbing/electric at the same time) and our favorite contractors are coming back out to add in the plumbing/electric for the washer/dryer. But that’s all the outside help we’re getting. The rest will involve a thousand (or really six weeks’ worth) of late nights after our day jobs spent knee deep in insulation, tile, drywall, paint, and lots of power tools.
So, while the room above is where we started, the latest update is when we added the initial plumbing/electric work a couple years ago, which just shows how scary this room is right now.
And the extraordinarily crude plan I’ve shared previously for the space is this:
The biggest change from this plan made years ago is taking the “storage” section and converting it to “storage and laundry”. Well worth it I think. Because laundry!
And maybe now is a good time for me to back up and say what this One Room Challenge (ORC) is all about? If you don’t already know it’s a very fun design event where over the course of six weeks 20 designers and many more bloggers simultaneously transform a room in their own home. The genius event is hosted by Linda at Calling it Home. In past challenges I’ve done (in reverse order, so good photos first and worst last, haha) my master bedroom, entry, dining room, my daughter’s room, and my son’s room. That first pic in this post is our master bedroom redone just a few months ago and we’re still loving it very much. Very. And because we are, a few more shots of that goodness so your eyes aren’t burdened by the currently ugly closet/bathroom situation forever.
I’m really hoping our bathroom turns out even half as enjoyable as this space. Or at least that it gets finished. And this round I’m in VERY impressive company for the 20 designers on board. They’re all linked below and, if you even at all care about befores/afters or creative people, you’ll want to check out each and every one.
So, stay tuned every week for the updates on our space. At a minimum, you’ll want to find out if we have a major fail on our hands from taking on too much or if we can pull it off with lots of all nighters. And as usual, you’ll get the best updates on Instagram so follow along there. FINGERS CROSSED!!
