Soooooooooo, we got a new front door – yay!
[Excuse the blurred out address above the door.] Our old door was ridiculously ugly. That is a fact, not an opinion. Not only was the door itself ugly (bubbling paint, hideous brown, rigged so that a too-small door would fit the current opening) but the side lites were hideous as well, made of large, stacked, glass blocks. It kind of made you think of an 80’s shower in your entry.
Even after I painted the interior white, the ugly side blocks remained – yucko.
Aside from being ugly, we needed to let more light into the east side of the house. What’s nice about our entry is that it isn’t part of the main living space of our house so we can get away with having a clear glass door. We also needed something to amp up our newly opened entry. And why bother to put in a cool entry light if you can’t even see it from outside? So after years of searching for the perfect door, and even getting bids on several options, we settled on this one that is a 3/4 lite clear glass door with matching side lites:
Check out all those fun little squares! While I wanted to install the door ourselves, we were a little concerned that if we weren’t successful with the project, we would have no front door for days, or weeks(?!). So enter the install dude. For $550, he agreed to demo our old stuff, haul it away, pick up and deliver our new door/side lites, install all of it, and frame out the exterior. In a single day we went from the old ugly door to this:
I held off on painting the interior so we could deal with it at the same time as we painted our new built-ins (more on that to come . . .). But I did paint the outside door and trim.
I painted the trim to match our columns (Behr’s Antique White) and painted the door a bluish-turquoise (Behr’s Solitude).
I initially planned for a red door, but at the last minute switched it up to this blue-ish color. I thought the blue/turquoise would go well with the color planned for inside our entry and would work well with some other changes we are planning for the front of our house (yep, change is coming).
Now our entry is bright! (And really hard to photograph with all the awkward light shining through the glass squares, so I ditched those photos.) Surprisingly, the new door gives us more privacy than expected because outside light reflects off the glass squares, making it hard for someone standing outside our door to see inside.
Anyone else take the plunge after years of planning to get a new front door? Or go for a paint color based on its name while standing in the paint line?
