Yo, let’s talk front doors. Interior front doors. When people talk about front doors, or entry doors, more often than not they are talking about how they look from the outside. While that is important and I love the outside of our front door, I say the inside is just as important. Who sees the inside? You. Who should have an awesome interior front door to look at? You. If you have to look at that inside of the door, you should enjoy it. After all, you probably spend more time inside your home rather than standing in your front yard staring at the outside.
After lots of thought/debate over how we wanted the inside of our front door to look, we ended up with this:
I love this door. Is that weird that I am professing my love for my own door all over the internet? No matter, my love can’t be denied. I love the glass, the wood, and now the super dark stain on the inside of door with the bright white trim. We had the pros install our door, but I did the finishing and trim work myself. Here’s how it went down.
Start with a freshie door.
Trim it up by adding some casing (vertical trim pieces), half round molding, and head casing, all by using your saw and nail gun.
Then top it off with some crown molding, paint the trim work, and stain the door. I used Behr’s Swiss Coffee for the trim. I used my fave (you’ve seen it before – Varathane stain in Kona) for the door. It is super dark, takes only one coat, and dries super fast. I just applied with a foam brush and it worked great.
Then seal up that stain with some sort of polyurethane/polycrylic. I used the same Bona floor finish in gloss that I used for the neighboring bench seat. I get that my door isn’t a floor, but that’s what was in my basement and that’s just how I roll sometimes.
Let’s do a before and after:
See how much more the door stands out with a dark stain next to the white trim? It really makes the door the centerpiece, with the other pieces blending into the background.
Alrighty, let ‘er loose – what’s up with the inside of your front door. Plaint white? Bright color? Stained wood? Dish it!
P.S. Bachelor’s funniest moments last night? Watched it, loved it. My addiction to The Bachelor is a sickness, don’t judge.
