Things are happening here! Aside from a mini-flu bug that got me down this week, super busy stuff at work, a Mariner’s game, and more, we’ve finally turned our attention to the thing that bugged me the most when we bought our house: our very ugly and off-center fireplace.
So many ugly things about this:
- It is off-center.
- It is ugly.
- It does not put out any heat.
- It has ugly, enormous stones.
- It has a shiny stone hearth that takes up half the living room.
- It is really ugly.
Need I say more? The picture says it all. And here’s its close-up:
Back when we moved in, it looked like this (kind of fun to check out the old furniture, old tv, old built-ins, and old carpet – so glad all that’s gone.)
We’ve long wanted to redo the fireplace, but we are just now getting around to it. Really, we don’t have much of a choice because we are re-doing our floors and need to deal with that hearth beforehand. And you know, once you tear out the hearth you might as well keep going!
Ideally, we will replace the fireplace with a gas insert. Now we just have glass doors and a gas log set which do not really allow the fireplace to put out much heat. And considering I am always cold to my bones, I really want a fireplace that gets the job done. And then we want to build a surround with some sort of tile. I’ve been looking at tile and for some reason I can’t get this scallop marble tile out of my head. Too crazy?
We’d also like to re-orient our living room to have the tv over the fireplace – the only other spot for it is blocking windows and we’ve had it there for years and are ready for a change. Here are a few inspiration pics:
I can’t WAIT to have bright white trim instead of the ugly, old stone. I haven’t finalized the plans but will build the fireplace surround myself and will share all the info down the road. So far, we’ve made a little progress – demo! Here’s a blurry sneak peek of the jackhammering in progress:
Spoiler: I got to play with the kids while M handled the jackhammer – I’m pretty sure I got the better end of that deal. Hope to have more progress on the fireplace next week! That and a totally new project to share…
